One-to-one General/Business

Afrikaans Course in Plymouth

It's no problem if you need to take Afrikaans lessons specifically for personal use or to help with your career - our trainers mould the lesson plan to your precise needs.

General and Business courses in Afrikaans differ in style and content: a General course will concentrate on developing confident conversational skills, making short visits to the country less of an exercise in frustration and more about building upon the foundations to your own ends. A Business course will focus on business protocol in Afrikaans, and later on reading and writing will become more important.

The exact syllabus is not determined simply in terms of 'General' or 'Business' - the course is tailor-made to your needs. If, as a Business student, you need extra focus on telephone or email communication, or vocabulary from a specific field of business, you only need mention this to your tutor. Likewise, a General course can include specific elements that are integral to your needs, for example if you need vocabulary specific to buying property overseas.

We have a wide range of Business course clients for a variety of needs; including people who are off to work for a foreign administration, people working in a corporation with overseas headquarters, and import/export specialists. General courses cater mostly to those who wish to learn Afrikaans for short trips to (or through) a country where it is widely spoken; as well as those who wish to pass a specific Afrikaans exam, people who want to buy a home abroad, and people marrying into a Afrikaans family.

Info about Plymouth

With around 250,000 inhabitants, Plymouth is one of the more populous cities in the south west of the UK. It is not, however, one of the more culturally diverse. With its largest ethnic minority group making up only around 0.5% of the city's population as a whole, the cultural homogeny is in line with the county of Devon as a whole.

This does not, however, discount Plymouth from being a suitable place to pick up a new language. The University of Plymouth is the biggest university in the south-west, with more than 30,000 students and many of them coming from overseas; and Plymouth is well-known for having many schools teaching English as a foreign language, mainly for the children visiting the city by Ferry from France and Spain.

Info about Afrikaans

Originating from 17th century Dutch, Afrikaans is mainly spoken in South Africa and Namibia, though there are communities found throughout Africa. The language was considered a dialect of Dutch until the late 1800s, when it was pronounced an official language in its own right; though even today Dutch and Afrikaans are pretty much mutually intelligible. The language has spread and influenced other cultures: London has its own newspaper in Afrikaans - Die Stem; South African English has many loan words from Afrikaans; and there is a growing scene for musicians singing in the language.

Afrikaans is a rich and appealing language with a fascinating history and complicated social history, though its future as an official language of South Africa could well be under dispute.
