Info about Portsmouth
A city of almost 200,000 people, Porstmouth (or 'Pompey', as it is often nicknamed) is a large Hampshire city on the UK's south coast. For centuries it has been the site of major naval activity - the city has the oldest drydock in the world, and while its use has fallen into relative decline in recent years, it is still a bustling commercial port, and used regularly by the Royal Navy.
The city's population is diverse in domestic terms, mainly due to the influence of the Royal Navy. Many de-mobilised sailors from all around the country (as well as Ireland, Scotland and Wales) end up staying in Portsmouth. However, while tourism from overseas is strong in the city, the resident population is mainly white; though this takes nothing away from Portsmouth's capacity as a great place to learn a new language.
Info about Russian
As the most popular Slavic language with around 275 million speakers worldwide, Russian is the official language of Russia, and is spoken widely in countries that used to form republics of the now-dissolved USSR; for example Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Russian is an extremely challenging language to learn for those with no experience of Slavic languages. First of all there's the hurdle of the Cyrillic alphabet, of which the Russians use their own 33-letter variant. Then there's the pronunciation - almost a world apart from any English dialect. Russian is classified as a 'level III' language (the second hardest level) in terms of difficulty for native English speakers, according to the Defence Language Institute of California; but the doors that learning Russian opens to you cannot be underestimated.
