Recently I wrote about the confusion surrounding the use of bad<\/i> and badly<\/i>, and I was a little surprised at the response I received on the Language Trainers Facebook page\u2014that is to say, I was surprised there was any response at all! That\u2019s why I decided to give it another go and explain two other words that can be confusing to use: affect<\/i> vs effect.<\/i><\/p>\n

\"affect\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Affect or Effect? Meaning and Usage<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

To make things easier to understand, I\u2019ll give the general rule before I start getting into all the confusing exceptions. The majority of the time, affect<\/i> is used as a verb, and effect<\/i> is used as a noun.<\/b> Again, there are instances where this isn\u2019t the case, but for the most part this rule is all you\u2019ll need.<\/span><\/p>\n

To help you remember the correct usages, try this trick I learned in high school and think about Edgar Allen Poe and his RAVEN<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span><\/span><\/b>emember A<\/span><\/b>ffect V<\/span><\/b>erb E<\/span><\/b>ffect N<\/span><\/b>oun<\/span><\/p>\n

With that out of the way, let\u2019s get to the good stuff!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Affect Vs. Effect – Round 1: <\/strong><\/span>When to Use Affect<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Like I mentioned earlier, affect is almost always used as a verb. In this usage, to affect something is to influence or produce a change in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Julie wondered how her sleeping habits were affecting her grades.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Affect<\/span><\/i> can also mean to adopt a use, style, or manner of doing something.<\/span><\/p>\n

She affected an air of sophistication.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The exception to using affect<\/i> as a verb comes into play when you’re talking about psychology. In this context, affect can be used as a noun to indicate an observable expression of emotion. When used in this manner, there is generally more emphasis put on the first syllable of the word (AFF-ect).<\/span><\/p>\n

She displayed a flat affect.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In case you were wondering, having a \u201cflat affect\u201d means showing little or no emotions. Unless you work in a field where you are analyzing people\u2019s mental status, chances are you won\u2019t be using affect<\/i> in this was very often, so stick to the general rule and use affect<\/i> as a verb.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Affect vs Effect – Round 2: When to Use Effect<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"affect,<\/a>Effect<\/span><\/i>, on the other hand, is mostly commonly used as a noun meaning the result or impact of something.<\/span><\/p>\n

The effect of making the correct choice is a better grade.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

It can also refer to belongings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Take your personal effects with you when you leave.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Here comes the confusing exception to the rule: less commonly, effect can be used as a verb which means \u201cto succeed in making or doing something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They effected their escape through a rear window.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Or<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope to effect a change with my petition.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Did our little “Affect vs. Effect” guide help to clear things up a bit? I really hope so. I know it can be confusing, but about 80% of the time all you\u2019ll need to remember is RAVEN.<\/span><\/p>\n
