In this way, brushing up on language skills will be something you do for pleasure!<\/p>\n<h2>How can\u00a0I learn French with Lupin?<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing you should know is that Netflix allows you to set both the audio track or a set of subtitles in French. For this reason, we\u2019ve decided to compile a list of the most interesting vocabulary from Lupin with examples and definitions.<\/p>\n<h2>1.\u00a0<em>d\u00e9raper<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 to get out of hand<\/h2>\n<p>The word <em>d\u00e9raper<\/em>, whose literal meaning is skid, as when a vehicle slides on slippery ground, metaphorically serves to talk about situations that\u00a0get out of control.<\/p>\n<p>Example from the show:<em>\u00a0Je me rasais et \u00e7a a d\u00e9rap\u00e9. <\/em>(I was shaving and it got out of hand.)<\/p>\n<h2>2.\u00a0<em>coloc <\/em>\u2014 roomie (roommate)<\/h2>\n<p><em>Coloc<\/em>, which comes from <em>coloc<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>taire<\/em>, is an instance of clipping, i.e. the shortening of a word without a change in meaning.<\/p>\n<p><em>Example from the show: Voil\u00e0 ton nouveau coloc. <\/em>(Here is your new roommate.)<\/p>\n<h2>3.\u00a0<em>ouvrir une parenth\u00e8se<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 to digress<\/h2>\n<p>This expression, which is also used in Spanish (<em>abrir un par\u00e9ntesis<\/em>) serves as a warning that you\u2019re going to deviate from the main subject to go\u00a0off\u00a0on a tangent for a minute. For example, you might be talking about your friend\u2019s breakup and suddenly \u201copen a parenthesis\u201d to call her attention to how great your hair looks today.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<div style=\"height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%; position: relative; width: 100%;\"><iframe style=\"left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/f3k7PdF3NKJcP4eZDG\/video\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Example from the show: <em>J\u2019ouvre une parenth\u00e8se.<\/em>\u00a0(Figurative meaning: Let me digress for a minute)<\/p>\n<h2>4.\u00a0<em>maladresse <\/em>\u2014 clumsiness, awkwardness<\/h2>\n<p>This term is derived from the root <em>adresse<\/em>, to which the prefix <em>mal- <\/em>(similar to mis- in English) has been added to describe the feeling of worry, unease or embarrassment you get from listening to a socially inept person.<\/p>\n<p>Example from the show:<em>\u00a0Ce qu\u2019il essaye de dire avec beaucoup de maladresse\u2026 <\/em>(What he\u2019s so awkwardly trying to say is\u2026)<\/p>\n<h2>5.\u00a0<em>Se <\/em><em>foutre<\/em><em>\u00a0de ma <\/em><em>gueule<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 to make a fool\u00a0of me<\/h2>\n<p>This is one of those phrases that shows why language cannot be divorced from culture. \u00a0A disastrous literal translation would start with the (English!) F-word, and end with \u201cmy mouth\u201d.\u00a0Its figurative meaning is closer to English expressions such as \u201cmake fun of me\u201d or \u201claugh in my face\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Example from the show:<em>\u00a0Vous savez <\/em><em>vous<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>foutre de ma gueule. <\/em>(You know how to make a fool of me.)<\/p>\n<h2>6.\u00a0<em>d\u00e9formation professionnelle<\/em>\u2014 occupational hazard<\/h2>\n<p>This expression, which has nothing to do with malformations, is another one that might leave you scratching your head if the context is unclear. It merely refers to the habits we acquire in our jobs\u00a0and then\u00a0apply\u00a0in\u00a0other contexts. For example,\u00a0a \u201c<em><i>d\u00e9formation professionelle<\/i><\/em>\u201d\u00a0that some\u00a0teachers may have\u00a0is checking that everyone is\u00a0wearing their\u00a0uniforms correctly, even if they are\u00a0not students.<\/p>\n<p>Example from the show:<em>\u00a0Non, d\u00e9sol\u00e9e. D\u00e9formation professionnelle. <\/em>(No, sorry. Occupational hazard.)<\/p>\n<h2><i>7.\u00a0<\/i><em><i>taf<\/i><\/em>\u00a0\u2014 (slang) job<\/h2>\n<p>One of the disadvantages of learning languages with traditional textbooks is that you rarely learn informal expressions or slang. If you\u2019re a French learner, you\u2019re probably familiar with the words\u00a0<em>emploi<\/em>\u00a0and <em>travail<\/em>, but you might have never heard about <em>taf<\/em>. <em>Taf <\/em>is a synonym for <em>emploi<\/em>, but it\u2019s only used in very informal contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Example from the show: <em>J\u2019aimais mon taf.<\/em>\u00a0(I loved my job.)<\/p>\n<h2>8.\u00a0<em>p\u00e9cho<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 (slang) to hook up<\/h2>\n<p>This is a popular slang word used by French teenagers. It\u2019s used to talk about a casual encounter between two people who are not in a serious relationship and do not expect to meet each other\u2019s\u00a0parents\u00a0any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>Example from the show: <em>Je suis l\u2019homme de ta vie, mais sans qu\u2019on se p\u00e9cho?<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0(I\u2019m the man of your life, and still you won\u2019t hook up with me?.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/assets.pinterest.com\/ext\/embed.html?id=319755642300340914\" width=\"345\" height=\"514\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These are just a few examples of all the expressions you can learn from watching the highly addictive show <em><i>Lupin<\/i><\/em>. If anything, they show us that there&#8217;s a reason why so many people quote Netflix as a language-learning resource. When you watch a contemporary show from a foreign country, you get to listen to hundreds of phrases whose meaning is embedded in the culture in which they have been created, which can teach you a lot about how people communicate in real, everyday situations.<\/p>\n<p>At Language Trainers, we follow a similar approach.
