The celebrations include street parties, a traditional parade featuring 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians, and the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, an awe-inspiring spectacle that combines street arts, music, circus, theatre, and carnival.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"display: block; margin: auto;\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-zDyl7XF4y8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At Language Trainers, we are delighted to join in the celebration of Her Majesty\u2019s historic reign by writing about what we love most: language.<\/p>\n<p>While the UK is positively filled with wonderful, diverse, ever-growing English accents, it is undeniable that the \u201cQueen\u2019s English\u201d, also known as RP (Received Pronunciation) or Standard English, has a privileged place in language learning thanks to its reputation as a refined, geographically neutral, acoustically pleasant English variety.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog, we are going to tell you how to incorporate some of the features that make the Queen\u2019s English unique to your own pronunciation to help you sound more British than the entire cast of The Crown.<\/p>\n<h2>Seven features that make RP unique<\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few traits that make the Queen\u2019s English &#8211;the \u2018quintessentially British\u2019 accent&#8211; so special.<\/p>\n<h3>1.\u00a0\u00a0 The long vowel [\u0251\u02d0] in words such as \u201ccalm\u201d, \u201cbath\u201d, and \u201cstart\u201d.<\/h3>\n<p>In other varieties of English, the vowel sounds in \u201cbat\u201d and \u201cbath\u201d are very much alike. However, if you want to sound like a native British speaker, you have to make sure that your [\u0251\u02d0] sounds are long and \u2018dark\u2019, as opposed to the short, smiley sound in \u201ccat\u201d. In order to get your [\u0251\u02d0] sound right, make sure that your jaw is relaxed and slightly open and that you\u2019re not moving your lips at all. Practise this sound with words such as \u201cfather\u201d, \u201cpalm\u201d and \u201chard\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>2.\u00a0\u00a0 No [h] dropping, <em>\/m\u026ast\u0259\/<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Received Pronunciation is sometimes referred to as BBC English. This is because RP speakers tend to have the distinctively clear diction that we associate with British broadcasters. Indeed, one of the most salient features of RP is that the letter \u2018h\u2019 is never dropped at the beginning of words, which is common in many other varieties of English, especially Cockney and American English. So, if you want to sound like you were born in Oxford, avoid dropping your \u2018h\u2019 sounds in phrases like \u201cLet\u2019s \u2018ave a coffee\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>3.\u00a0\u00a0 Mind your \/j\/ sounds in words like \u201cnews\u201d and \u201cTuesday\u201d.<\/h3>\n<p>In certain varieties of English, it\u2019s very common to hear people say things like \/nu:z\/ instead of \/nju:z\/ (\u201cnews\u201d), \/du:\/ instead of \/dju:\/ (\u201cdue\u201d), and \/\u02c8stu:p\u026ad\/ instead of \/\u02c8stju:p\u026ad\/ (\u201cstupid\u201d), due to a historical process known as \u201cyod-dropping\u201d. Being a more conservative variety, RP has retained this sound albeit with a few exceptions:<\/p>\n<h3>4.\u00a0\u00a0 How to pronounce [r] between vowels<\/h3>\n<p>Conservative RP speakers pronounce their R\u2019s in a very specific way. While other speakers produce this consonant with a continuous or trilling sound, the most common pronunciation in RP involves a single tap. To make a tapped [r], you have to flick the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth &#8211; thus making only very brief and rapid contact. Practise this sound by saying words such as \u201cinherit\u201d, marry\u201d, \u201ccorridor\u201d, and \u201cduring\u201d. Make sure the sound is quick and brief, as opposed to vibrant and continuous.<\/p>\n<h3>5.\u00a0\u00a0 No [r] before consonants or at the end of words before pauses.<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike well-known English varieties such as Scottish, Irish and General American, no [r] sound is heard before consonants &#8211; dark: \/d\u0251\u02d0k\/, smart: \/sm\u0251\u02d0t\/, barn: \/b\u0251\u02d0n\/; or at the end of words &#8211; car: \/ka:\/, dear: \/d\u026a\u0259\/, fur: \/f\u025c\u02d0\/. However, if words ending in the letter R are followed by words beginning with a vowel, [r] is used as a linking sound: dear Amanda \/d\u026a\u0259r_\u0251m\u0251nd\u0251\/.<\/p>\n<h3>6.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cOh no?\u201d More like \/\u0259\u028a n\u0259\u028a\/<\/h3>\n<p>In RP, the vowel sound in words like \u201cno\u201d, \u201cgo\u201d, and \u201cphone\u201d is produced at the front of the mouth. Instead of saying \/n\u0252\u028a\/, \/g\u0252\u028a\/ or \/f\u0252\u028an\/, with an \u2018o\u2019 sound, RP speakers say \/n\u0259\u028a\/, \/g\u0259\u028a\/ and \/f\u0259\u028an\/, with a distinctive \u2018schwa\u2019 sound at the beginning which is more similar to an \u2018e\u2019 than to an \u2018o\u2019. Practice this sound by saying the words \u201cshow\u201d, \u201cclone\u201d, \u201cdose\u201d, and \u201cpose\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>7.\u00a0\u00a0 Say your T\u2019s loud and clear.<\/h3>\n<p>As we\u2019ve said before, a key feature of RP is the importance of pronouncing every sound clearly. When you say a word that has a T as in an accented syllable, make sure you produce enough aspiration so that this sound is released with an audible puff of air. Also, if you have a T between vowels, as in \u201ccity\u201d, bear in mind that the quality of the consonant must be retained.
