Yes, Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language native to the Indian state of Gujarat. It is one of the 22 languages listed in the Indian Constitution \u00a0and is officially recognised in both Gujarat and the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. With roots dating back to Old Gujarati (circa 1100\u20131500 CE), it has evolved into one of the most widely spoken languages in India. Today, it ranks as the 6th most spoken language in the country, with over 55 million speakers, making up around 4.5% of India\u2019s population.<\/p>\n

Gujarati is also one of the fastest-growing Indian languages, not only in India but across the globe, especially in countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, thanks to the Gujarati diaspora.<\/p>\n

Where is the Gujarati Language Spoken?<\/h2>\n

While Gujarat is the primary region where Gujarati is spoken, the language has a global presence due to the extensive migration of the Gujarati people. In India, Gujarati is also widely spoken in the financial hub of Mumbai. The Gujarati Alphabet<\/h2>\n

The Gujarati alphabet is a syllabic script, meaning each consonant comes with a built-in vowel sound [\u0259], which is like the weak ‘a’ vowel sound in sofa. To change this vowel sound, small marks called diacritics are added around the letter. For example, ‘\u0a95’ (k\u0259) can become ‘\u0a95\u0ac0’ (k\u012b) by adding a mark for the vowel ‘\u012b’, or ‘\u0a95\u0abe’ (k\u0101) by adding the mark for ‘\u0101’, which has a similar sound to the long ‘a’ in father.<\/p>\n

In Gujarati, vowels can either stand alone or modify consonants, and consonants are grouped by how they’re pronounced. For instance, ‘\u0a95’ (k) is a sound made at the back of the mouth, while ‘\u0a97’ (g) is pronounced in the same place but sounds stronger because it’s voiced.
