Edinburgh, a fast-growing city of over a half a million people, has been a natural location for foreign consulates as far back as when Scotland was an independent kingdom. One of those, and the most well-known, is the French consulate, due to the countries’ diplomatic relationship spanning over a millennium in what was known as the Auld Alliance. Thanks to this long-lasting accord, French influence can be found throughout the city. Today, approximately 300 million people worldwide are French speakers, and more than 5,000 of them live in Edinburgh, according to the French Consulate. So, taking French lessons in Edinburgh will give you the chance to connect with this community while exploring some of the themed events and festivals that take place in the city each year. You can also contact the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce on George Street, an institution that, as of 2018, organises trade missions to Paris with the aim of helping Scottish companies to tap into business opportunities in France. You will have the chance to network and explore the export potential in France for your organisation, so take advantage of this opportunity and impress French entrepreneurs with your language skills!
Learn French for Culture and Studies: Another significant cultural stage in the city includes the Franco-Scottish Society of Scotland. Founded in 1895, this institution organises cultural meetings, which include talks, films, discussions, visits, wine-tastings, social or sporting events and soirées. If you love cinema, you can attend the Edinburgh International Festival. Every year, it features classic and contemporary films of French origin, which are screened in their original language. Forget about English subtitles after taking some lessons with us at Language Trainers! And if you would like to pursue higher education to keep on learning more about this fascinating language (and its culture!), you will be glad to know that the University of Edinburgh has an available programme called MA French. This programme will enable you to study a major European language as well as the literature, artistic developments and theories of learning and teaching associated with it. You will need an intermediate level of French to enrol in this course, so get in touch with us as soon as possible and we will help you prepare!
Learn French for Social: And if you would like to socialise with other people who have a similar interest in French, you can join the Edimbourg Francais: Edinburgh's French Conversation Group. Its members welcome people interested in France and the French language. Every Friday, they get together for conversation and drinks in a pub! They also organise parties, game nights and cinema outings from time to time, so joining this group is the perfect opportunity to make new friends while practising your French and having a great time! And you can take your new friends to one of the many French restaurants in the city, such as Chez Jules on Hanover Street and L’Escargot Blanc and L’Escargot Bleu on Broughton Street. You will be able to order traditional dishes in those restaurants, such as le confit de canard and languedoc using the French pronunciation you acquired in your lessons with us!
