One-to-one General/Business
Afrikaans Course in Portsmouth
Whether you're looking to learn a language for personal or business reasons, our tailor-made courses can help you achieve your aims.
While a General Afrikaans course will provide you with enough linguistic ammunition to allow you to survive a short visit to the country (greetings, basic conversation and a solid grammatical foundation). A Business course will focus on business protocol in Afrikaans, and later on reading and writing will become more important.
Our Afrikaans courses would not be fixed to a specific curriculum, however. You know the specifics of what you will need from your new language, and all you need do is tell your teacher. Perhaps if you are taking a Business course, you may want to focus more on Afrikaans telephone or email skills, or a specific vocabulary for your line of work. Likewise, a General course can include specific elements that are integral to your needs, for example if you need vocabulary specific to buying property overseas.
We have a wide range of Business course clients for a variety of needs; including people who are off to work for a foreign administration, people working in a corporation with overseas headquarters, and import/export specialists. Our General courses cater for people aiming to purchase overseas property, globetrotters, Afrikaans language and culture devotees, as well as people who need to pass a particular Afrikaans exam.

Info about Portsmouth
A city of almost 200,000 people, Porstmouth (or 'Pompey', as it is often nicknamed) is a large Hampshire city on the UK's south coast. For centuries it has been the site of major naval activity - the city has the oldest drydock in the world, and while its use has fallen into relative decline in recent years, it is still a bustling commercial port, and used regularly by the Royal Navy.
The city's population is diverse in domestic terms, mainly due to the influence of the Royal Navy. Many de-mobilised sailors from all around the country (as well as Ireland, Scotland and Wales) end up staying in Portsmouth. However, while tourism from overseas is strong in the city, the resident population is mainly white; though this takes nothing away from Portsmouth's capacity as a great place to learn a new language.
Info about Afrikaans
Originating from 17th century Dutch, Afrikaans is mainly spoken in South Africa and Namibia, though there are communities found throughout Africa. The language was considered a dialect of Dutch until the late 1800s, when it was pronounced an official language in its own right; though even today Dutch and Afrikaans are pretty much mutually intelligible. The language has spread and influenced other cultures: London has its own newspaper in Afrikaans - Die Stem; South African English has many loan words from Afrikaans; and there is a growing scene for musicians singing in the language.
Afrikaans is a rich and appealing language with a fascinating history and complicated social history, though its future as an official language of South Africa could well be under dispute.
