One-to-one General/Business

Afrikaans Course in Southampton

It's no problem if you need to take Afrikaans lessons specifically for personal use or to help with your career - our trainers mould the lesson plan to your precise needs.

General and Business courses in Afrikaans differ in style and content: a General course will concentrate on developing confident conversational skills, making short visits to the country less of an exercise in frustration and more about building upon the foundations to your own ends. A Business course in Afrikaans will generally cover basic business etiquette in that language, and at a higher level, reading and writing in Afrikaans.

The possibilities are not limited to these two categories, however. Those taking a Business course will generally also learn Afrikaans telephone and email skills, as well as learning the basics for surviving short visits to the country. Similarly, General courses can delve deeper into certain areas of the language that you know you will need.

Our Business courses cater to a range of requirements. Many of our clients work for foreign governments and educational institutions, corporations with branches abroad, as well as those who buy and sell around the world. Clients of our General Afrikaans courses include people moving abroad, those entering a Afrikaans family through marriage, those studying for a Afrikaans exam, as well as those who are simply passionate about Afrikaans language and culture.

Info about Southampton

The biggest city on the south coast, Southampton and its surrounding area has around 250,000 inhabitants and a great deal of cultural and ethnic diversity can be found. Almost 1 in 10 people in the city are Polish, making it a great place to pick up a Slavic tongue; and with sizeable Chinese, Irish and Asian communities as well as its interest as a tourist destination for Europeans, it's a great place to pick up almost any language. Most of this mass immigration has arrived in the last few decades, turning Southampton into one of the most densely-populated cities in the UK.

So often linked with maritime history, Southampton's glowing reputation as an illustrious port town stems back to the early 20th century when it handled most of the passenger traffic for the UK.

Info about Afrikaans

Originating from 17th century Dutch, Afrikaans is mainly spoken in South Africa and Namibia, though there are communities found throughout Africa. The language was considered a dialect of Dutch until the late 1800s, when it was pronounced an official language in its own right; though even today Dutch and Afrikaans are pretty much mutually intelligible. The language has spread and influenced other cultures: London has its own newspaper in Afrikaans - Die Stem; South African English has many loan words from Afrikaans; and there is a growing scene for musicians singing in the language.

Afrikaans is a rich and appealing language with a fascinating history and complicated social history, though its future as an official language of South Africa could well be under dispute.
