Originating from 17th century Dutch, Afrikaans is mainly spoken in South Africa and Namibia, though there are communities found throughout Africa. Afrikaans is a rich and appealing language with a fascinating history and complicated social history, though its future as an official language of South Africa could well be under dispute.
