Language Trainers: Why did you choose to learn Greek, and how did you find Language Trainers?
Rev Falconer: I booked a holiday to Crete over the Greek Easter and wanted to learn some basic Greek. After searching the internet, I found that Language Trainers offered the best opportunity for one-to-one tuition. Although I knew it wouldn’t be cheap, I felt I could afford 16 weekly 2-hour sessions. It has proven to be value for money.
Language Trainers: Can you tell us about the process of finding a tutor through Language Trainers?
Rev Falconer: The staff at Language Trainers took considerable effort to find an appropriate tutor for me, an 82-year-old retired Anglican priest. They found an excellent teacher, Marina, whose home was accessible by public transport. Marina is an expert in Greek, very clear in her diction, patient, and tailored the course to suit my needs.
Language Trainers: How much progress have you made in Greek?
Rev Falconer: Marina took me from very little knowledge of modern Greek to a stage where I have advanced considerably in reading and writing, with an increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar. I'm much slower at retaining this in my head and speaking fluently, but I can now say "Μιλάω λίγο Ελληνικά" (I speak a little Greek).
Language Trainers: What were some highlights of your lessons?
Rev Falconer: I enjoyed learning about Greek customs and foods associated with Christmas, New Year, and Easter from Marina. The 2-hour sessions flew by due to her sympathetic and hospitable nature. I would have liked to continue further, but with the holiday to pay for, it wasn’t affordable.
Language Trainers: How are you continuing your Greek studies?
Rev Falconer: Now, it’s down to me. For 15-30 minutes most days, I do some of the coursework Marina gave me. I am also writing a brief 3 or 4 sentence daily diary, then speaking it out loud, and listening to a CD or online Greek speakers.
Language Trainers: Would you recommend Language Trainers to others?
Rev Falconer: It has been a most rewarding experience. I highly recommend Language Trainers, especially if others receive a tutor as exemplary as mine. Although I don’t have a favorite phrase, I’ll just say: "Είχα ευχάριστα μαθήματα με μια εξαιρετική καθηγήτρια" (I had enjoyable lessons with an excellent teacher).
