English in Oxford

Why learn English in Oxford? – With its rising spires and neoclassical architecture, Oxford is a thriving city with a growing economy. It topped the PwC Good Growth for Cities Index again in 2018 because of its mix of employment opportunities, healthcare, affordable housing and low commuting times. Famed for its university – which is the oldest in the English-speaking world – the city is also one of the fastest growing in the UK. It’s got a large international population, with approximately 20% of its 162,000 residents coming from other parts of the world.

Learning English in Oxford not only places students at the centre of academic excellence, it also places them at the heart of the language itself. The Oxford English Dictionary is one of the most authoritative records of the English language, with over 600,000 words in their books and more added each year. The city has a fun side as well. Harry Potter fans can don their Hogwarts uniforms and wander the filming locations for the magical school’s library and Great Hall. Quidditch matches may be hard to come by, but the annual Henley boat race in late March and early April is a worthy substitute. There’s also annual literary, music, fashion and beer festivals as well as a host of museums, galleries and attractions. Oxford was Visit Britain’s eighth most popular city in 2017, after 536,000 international visitors spent more than one night in the city.

Unsurprisingly, education and publishing are cornerstones of the city’s economy, offering plenty of job opportunities for those taking English classes in Oxford. However, Oxfordshire is also one of Europe’s leading centres for innovation and science. This is in part due to the Oxford Science Park, which, as of 2019, is home to 70 influential science and technology businesses – including TripAdvisor, Oxford Nanopore and IBM.

An estimated 600,000 people travel to the UK every year to learn English, according to a 2016 report by Marketing English Ireland. Taking English classes in Oxford will allow you to study under experienced teachers while enjoying the city’s multicultural mix of culture, history and community. And speaking English is becoming an essential requirement of today’s business and political world. According to the British Council, one in every four people worldwide speak English to a useful level. This makes it increasingly the lingua franca for trade and politics, especially between countries that do not share a common tongue. Why not take our free online English level test to find out how good your English is?

From an employment perspective, speaking English gives access to higher-paid jobs and improved opportunities in communications, science, technology and business. Send us a quick enquiry to find out about the personalised courses that will help you climb that ladder.
