French in London
Why learn French in London? – Traditionally, the UK and France have been ‘historic rivals’, but today their relationship is far more cordial. France is the UK’s third-largest trading partner, importing $32.8 billion worth of shipments in 2017, according to the Office for National Statistics. With Brexit looming, it is more important now than ever to establish secure relationships with Europe. Taking French courses in London is the perfect way to learn and apply a skill which will benefit both your career and your personal life. With so many opportunities available in this international city, learning a foreign language will bring you closer to a global stage.
As the capital of the UK, London hosts a number of large, diverse communities. Often referred to as France’s “sixth biggest city”, French culture is deeply ingrained in all areas of London life – the French consulate estimates that between 300,000 and 400,000 French citizens now call London home. 2ForTheRoad is one organisation that works on promoting predominantly French contemporary artists in London, hosting numerous concerts throughout the year. Authentic French gastronomy, which has been part of the UNESCO list for ‘intangible cultural heritage’ since 2010, can also be found throughout the city. With restaurants such as Aubaine highlighting the best of French cuisine, there is much to be appreciated in London. Taking French lessons in London will bring you closer to a culture which has contributed much of its literature, art, music and dining to humanity’s heritage, opening the door to more new and exciting experiences.
While English is certainly one of the most important languages in the world, the value of learning French is not to be underestimated. Aside from English, French is the only other language which shares the distinction of being taught by every country in the world. With over 220 million French speakers in total, according to the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, pairing French with English allows you even greater access to opportunities present around the world, such as Canada, Switzerland, Belgium and the continent of Africa. French is also one of the easiest languages for an English speaker to pick up, and it can lead very easily into other Romance languages, such as Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. As bilingualism becomes an increasingly common phenomenon in today’s society, it is no longer enough to rely on English alone. Knowing a second language can boost your marketability among employers considerably, with a 2014 study by The Economist estimating that the average financial benefit of a second language rests at about $67,000 over a 40-year career.
