Mandarin Chinese in Birmingham
Today, China is the second-largest economy in the world and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop growing. Knowing Mandarin Chinese, then, offers you endless business opportunities in sectors like finance, IT, retail and education. It also allows you to communicate with more than 12 thousand Chinese people who live in Birmingham. If you decide to get started with this fantastic language, you can send Language Trainers a message and get a course designed for your needs and abilities.
Why Study Chinese in Birmingham
For work: Learning how to speak Chinese can help you advance in your career, especially in the fields of International Business and Affairs and Marketing. Currently, companies such as InTouch Games, Zachary Daniels and Recruitment Genius are looking for candidates who are also Mandarin speakers. If you would like to know more about business relations between China and your city, you can always contact the Birmingham China Business Forum on Bradford Street. This organization tries to build awareness of these opportunities and holds annual events to foster collaboration between these two countries. Active since 2013, this business forum welcomes everyone who wants to work and collaborate with Chinese companies. Understanding Chinese can also come in handy when contacting the China-Britain Business Council on Harborne Road, an institution that collaborates with these countries’ governments and trade associations, providing support services to UK companies that desire to enter the Chinese market. Founded in 1954, this Business Council has been helping both UK companies develop and grow their business with China and Chinese companies expand and invest in the UK for more than 60 years.
For Social: If you are also interested in making new friends within the Chinese community in Birmingham, you can join the Mandarin English Exchange MeetUp group. With more than 125 members, they welcome both native Mandarin speakers and learners of the language so they can practise and get to know more about the Chinese culture. They meet every Wednesday and Friday to have some fun at a private location that is only disclosed to those who join the group. In this way, you can become a member of an international community with a local twist. Those more interested in attending Chinese spectacles with friends can also do so. Every two years, the dance troupe Shen Yun presents in Birmingham with brand-new productions that include ethnic dances, traditional costumes, and exquisite melodies in Chinese. Perhaps, after taking some classes with Language Trainers, you can try to meet the dancers and use some of the Chinese you have learned.
For Culture:
If you wish to experience Chinese culture in Birmingham first-hand, you can visit Chinatown, located just five minutes walk from New Street Station. The neighbourhood started to be built in the 1960s, and its architecture is predominantly Chinese. Most of the businesses there are Chinese-owned, such as social clubs and restaurants. For example, you can visit the Wok Chi Oriental Kitchen on High Street and get a taste of their oriental kitchen. You can also go to the Chung Ying Central Bar & Restaurant on Colmore Row. Established in 1987, this is one of the largest and most popular Chinese restaurants in the Midlands. Apart from reading menus in Mandarin, you can also attend some of the events the owners organize. You’ll be able to dance all night long or even sing along traditional Chinese songs to practise your Mandarin pronunciation!
