A large town in south London holding over 350,000 people, Croydon originally came into being as a halfway house between London and Brighton, and was used as a rest stop for stage coaches for the affluent citizens on their way to the popular seaside resort. The advent of rail travel catalysed Croydon's growth, and the town gained popularity as a residential suburb during the 19th century.
