The county seat of County Limerick in the Munster Province, Republic of Ireland, Limerick is a city with a population of around 100,000. Built upon the river Shannon, the city dates back to the Viking age and was later taken by the Normans. The city played an integral role during the civil wars of the 17th century, and grew rich as a trade hub in the late 18th century before being crippled by the Irish famine. As the fourth largest city in the ROI, Limerick has a burgeoning immigrant population, consisting primarily of Polish and African communities. Nowadays the city stands as an important centre for Irish higher education, and is often referred to as the home of Irish rugby union.
